78 years ago – on September 29, 1941 – in the tract Babiy Yar, the Nazis began mass executions of the Jewish population of Kiev. This tragedy has become the worldwide symbol of the Holocaust.
Babi Yar is the tragedy of all mankind, but it happened on Ukrainian soil. Not a single Ukrainian has the right to forget about her in the same way as not a single Jew. Babi Yar is our common tragedy, the tragedy of, above all, the Jewish and Ukrainian peoples.
This is an initial reminder to us of the pain that will never pass and we must always remember the hundreds of thousands of people who died in Babi Yar.
Today, efforts must be made to prevent the recurrence of crimes against national and religious identities in the future. This should concern every person and citizens of Ukraine cannot be on the side of these processes.
I believe that together we will not allow racial discrimination, persecution on ethnic grounds, or a split of the country on language, faith or any other grounds.
